You're right about Bible studies -- no big deal -- but that's not what Hillary's was. It was seven years with Susan Baker, wife of James and a former member of the board of Focus on the Family; Joanne Kemp, wife of Jack and one of the founders of the Schaeffer Group, which brought Francis Schaeffer's ideas to Capitol Hill; Eileen Bakke, wife of energy titan Dennis, founder of a fundamentalist private school and leading activist for school privatization; Janet Hall, wife of former Dem Rep Tony, who credits The Family with moving he and his wife from liberalism to conservative, pro-life, anti-gay views; and Grace Nelson, wife of Florida Dem senator Bill, conservative, pro-war Democrat. Grace explained the substance of the meetings to my colleague and I: how to conform government to God's will.

One needn't be a theophobe to believe that government ought to be conformed to the will of the people, not of the divine.

As for the hidden nature of the Family: hey, it's Doug Coe, Hillary's "genuinely loving spiritual mentor" who calls it "invisible," not me, and Doug Coe who says that the National Prayer Breakfast -- referred to internally as a "recruiting tool" isn't "one tenth of one percent of the iceberg."
