for the Friday Random 10 I had to make heavy use of a site that's supposed to be a no-go...

You must not have server affinity enabled, or are handling sessions using a MySQL database, since I was getting the error about a third of the time.
(I do this sort of stuff for a living.)

... about the software that runs this place; besides, we're hosted by the Great Orange Satan (AKA Daily Kos), run on their servers and use their software, though we get updates anywhere from 6 to 18 months behind the Big Orange.

My current gig has me doing a lot of java work, though. (Yuck.) I'm also a server admin and I maintain quite a few legacy Perl and Bash scripts

I wondered about that 503 too. Thanks I suspect that we will all be delighed when it is fixed.
