the words "moral" and "patriot" (as in protection of the Constitution) would be good to include.

trunk I found his Geneva Conventions ID card -- from the Korean conflict. Pilots did not want to go down in Korea -- what awaited the captured was call "brainwashing" then -- but it was torture and and a lot of it involved water. Those guys packed extraordinary gear just in case they went down.
Bad guys brainwashed their captives. We were not the "bad guys".
My parents knew at least one guy who had been captured, tortured, and who had been "broken" under the torture.
We abided by the Geneva Conventions for the protection of our own people.
Dad is probably rolling in his grave knowing that the President he voted for authorized this abomination.
I keep thinking about when those Abu Ghraib photos came out of Iraq -- and the party line was that it was a "few bad apples" who were responsible.
