Ramadan Day 23: Verses from the Quran

Thu Oct 27, 2005 at 06:05:08 PM PDT

Each day during Ramadan, I am presenting a verse from the Quran with a few thoughts or comments. An introduction to this series is here. Inshallah (God willing), I hope that this may be of benefit to any who are interested in learning a bit more about Islam and Muslim belief.

Quran 39:23:

Allah has sent down the most beautiful saying, a Scripture, consistent and repeating; the skin of those who fear their Lord shivers at it, then their skin and their hearts soften to the remembrance of Allah. That is the guidance of Allah. He guides whom He wills. And whom He sends astray, for him there is no guidance
Have you ever been reading a passage in Scripture and felt your skin shiver and your heart soften? This is a sign when you recognize Truth in what you read.

I love this verse because of its vivid description of what this experience is like.

I hope that all who follow a Scripture have felt this when reading it sometimes.

Thank you, again, for this series.

How interesting that this is so like the sort of experience I descibed having in an earlier one of your diaries.  For me it's a pleasant chill down the spine - but I recognized the description in the Qu'ran passage as speaking of the "same" thing even before reading your comments.

  • Yes, I have: (0 / 0)

scripture, poetry, literature and children's laughter, to name a few, have given me moments of such truth. As always, thank you for your diaries. They have all been bookmarked as keepers.
  • Just a suggestion... (0 / 0)

First, thanks for posting verses from the Qur'an in this forum. A suggestion though... it might be better to translate the whole verse. One word is left untranslated... the Arabic word for God.. "Allah". So often printed media even from our own faith neglect to translate this word, leaving the impression that "Allah" is something other than the Judeo-Christian concept of God.

While we have our conceptual differences, "Allah" is the same God that appears in the Old and New Testaments. In fact most of the stories and characters are the same as well.

To God belong the east and the west: Whereso ever you turn, there is the face of God. For God is all-Embracing, all-Knowing.

Thanks for this thought. I tend to use the two interchangeably and I try to make it clear if there's any confusion or misapprehension. I'll keep your suggestion in mind for the future, however.

Thanks to everybody who shared their stories! It's great to read these.

I've been swamped with work lately so I didn't get back until now but I really appreciate everybody who shared!
