Ramadan Day 14: Verses from the Quran

Tue Oct 18, 2005 at 08:00:23 PM PDT

Each day during Ramadan, I am presenting a verse from the Quran with a few thoughts or comments. An introduction to this series is here. Inshallah (God willing), I hope that this may be of benefit to any who are interested in learning a bit more about Islam and Muslim belief.

Quran 16:58-16:59:

And when one of them is giving tidings of a female (to be born), his face darkens and he is grieved. He hides from the people in shame because of these tidings. Will he keep it or bury it in the dust? Ah, evil is what they decide!
In this passage, God condemns those men who value their daughters less than their sons and are unhappy when a daughter is born.

Sadly, many men in a number of Muslim cultures seem to be unaware of this teaching in how they act to and value their daughters, may God forgive them.

Some sayings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) about the rewards that come from raising daughters (cited here) are:

  • Whoever takes care of two girls until they reach adulthood - he and I will come (together) on the Day of Resurrection [meaning in Paradise]

  • Whoever has three daughters or sisters, or two daughters or two sisters, and lives along with them in a good manner, and has patience with them, and fears Allah with regard to them will enter Paradise

  • They will be a shield for him from the Fire
