Ramadan Day 16: Verses from the Quran

Thu Oct 20, 2005 at 08:04:04 PM PDT

Each day during Ramadan, I am presenting a verse from the Quran with a few thoughts or comments. An introduction to this series is here. Inshallah (God willing), I hope that this may be of benefit to any who are interested in learning a bit more about Islam and Muslim belief.

Quran 18:109:

Say: If the ocean were ink for (writing) the words of my Lord, the ocean would be exhausted before the words of my Lord would be, even if we brought another like that of ink
The command "Say" is addressed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the rest of the verse consists of the words he was to speak.

This verse is a beautiful metaphor for the limitless nature of God's signs for us and blessings to us.

Along similar lines, a Muslim thinker said:

The parable of the knowledge of all of mankind, in comparison to the knowledge of Allah, is that of a drop of water in comparison to all of the oceans

There is nothing that is comparable to God in any of his attributes.
