Ramadan Day 21: Verses from the Quran

Tue Oct 25, 2005 at 07:39:33 PM PDT

Each day during Ramadan, I am presenting a verse from the Quran with a few thoughts or comments. An introduction to this series is here. Inshallah (God willing), I hope that this may be of benefit to any who are interested in learning a bit more about Islam and Muslim belief.

Quran 30:22:

And from His signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth and your different languages and colors. Surely in that are signs to all the worlds
Another verse along similar lines is 49:13:

O people! surely We have created you of a male and a female, and made you tribes and families that you may know each other; surely the most honorable of you with Allah is the one among you most careful (of his duty); surely Allah is Knowing, Aware.

Both of these verses draw our attention to the diversity of humanity. We have different languages we speak, different colors of skin, different nationalities, and different family or tribal groupings. As well, there are the two different genders.

This diversity is the way that God has created us, deliberately. It is one of His signs to show us the way.

We are created different so that we can learn from each other, from the different ways that we have. None of us is complete and perfect unto ourselves, nor is any group. Instead, we each bring a part of the human experience and together we can come to see more of the whole.

It is also important to remember that no group is superior to any other group because of who the group is. Instead, the only superiority that any person has over another person is if they are more righteous.

Whites aren't superior to blacks or blacks to whites or any other race because of their race. Americans aren't superior to, say, Iraqis or Chinese, nor are Iraqis or Chinese superior to Americans, because of their nationality. Men aren't superior to women or women to men because of their gender.

Instead, the best person is the one who is the most righteous, whatever the color of their skin, the language they speak, the country they come from, their family or social status, or their sex.

In his last sermon, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) referenced this again:

All mankind is from Adam and Eve, an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over a black, nor a black has any superiority over a white - except by piety and good action.
