The Guided Life: Part 2

Mon May 12, 2008 at 08:57:07 AM PDT

[Number twenty-three in a series]

I am continuing to look at Chapter 9 ("The Guided Life: Receiving Guidance from the Holy Spirit") of John Ortberg's The Life You've Always Wanted. The study questions are from the back of the book, and were written by Kevin G. Harney.

The book is about spiritual disciplines. The most important thing I have gotten from the book about spiritual disciplines in general is that we should not do them just so we can check them off a list. They are not a barometer of spirituality or a way to earn favor with God. They are a way to enable the transformation God wants to make in your life.

Interupting Heaven: Part 2

Tue Mar 04, 2008 at 08:00:47 PM PDT

I am continuing to journal the study questions from Chapter 6 ("Interrupting Heaven: The Practice of Prayer") of John Ortberg's The Life You've Always Wanted. Someone said they appreciated my questions. They are not mine. They are the study questions in the back of the book, written by Kevin G. Harney.

Interrupting Heaven: Part 1

A while ago I was posting the study questions from a book my small group was studying on spiritual disciplines. I stopped for a long time, but now I am going to come back and finish.

That past effort is linked in this index. As you can see, the last diary here was from over a year ago - a bit of a vacation.

I think these diaries have something to say to anyone that practices spiritual disciplines in whatever their spiritual path is - but the book is obviously written to Christians by a Christian. This is a discussion of practicing spiritual disciplines - and not a place to talk about "the point of" spiritual disciplines.

When You Pray: Why Do You Pray?

I seem to be on about a diary a month program here - at least for the last 3 months. I wanted to diary this here for a few reasons:
  • one of the "sparks" for the post came from a discussion here
  • mega-churches and their cultures seem to be a frequent subject of discussion here - and Lake Pointe is pretty mega-
  • there has been a lot of discussion of new leaders in Evangelicalism - and Wes Hamilton seems to qualify.
