Book Club: Small Gods

Sat Mar 08, 2008 at 01:03:46 PM PDT

Promoted, belatedly, by PD

Small Gods is a Discworld book, but I like it better than the others I have read.  I think it's the subject matter, and maybe the fact that it doesn't take place in Ankh-Morpork.  As you can tell from my signature, the book made a big impression on me.

Good design for houses of worship

Sat Dec 01, 2007 at 04:27:23 PM PDT

The UU church I attend here in Phoenix is planning and fundraising for extensive renovations.  This has got me thinking about what makes for a great house or worship/sacred space/home for a non-virtual faith community.

What is a miracle?

Mon Oct 08, 2007 at 01:54:02 PM PDT

What do you think is a miracle?  Do miracles necessarily violate the known laws of physics?  Do they involve magic?  Good or saintly people?  Or is a miracle simply something unexpected or awe-inspiring?

Have you witnessed a miracle in your lifetime?
Have you witnessed one today?

Ask a Heathen idolator

Welcome to the long-awaited lonespark "Ask a..." diary!  It was going to be "Ask a Polytheist," or "Ask a Confused Person," but those were taken.  So who are you asking?

I could use your prayers and help

Sun Aug 20, 2006 at 01:49:18 PM PDT

My life since Wednesday: some good news, some bad news, a lot of confusion...

Had a baby Thursday morning.  Healthy boy, cuter than hell, a proud addition the Line.
He's many times a miracle considering I didn't do anything right to plan for him.  Wasn't even sure if we should keep him, crazy as that feels now.  With the support of my husband and family, I know I can.

August Book Club?

Mon Aug 07, 2006 at 10:46:30 AM PDT

Moved by Mrs Pastor. Read along for information about our next discussion.

I understand that the book for August is  Terry Prachett's Small Gods.  I'm not clear who's in charge of it.  It might be me.  So...

If you're actually in charge, post here and take over.  Otherwise, vote for a discussion day.  I think following the example from July, and discussing different parts of the book at different times, followed by a more comprehensive one at the end, is a good idea.  You're voting on the final discussion day.

Does your faith require a moral God?

Sun Jan 22, 2006 at 09:24:07 AM PDT

On the radio the other day there was discussion of the moral and ethical nature of God, prompted by Ray Nagin's remarks.  I suppose I had not given the question all that much thought before, and I was suprised by my conclusion that my faith in no way requires a moral Deity.
