Disrespecting Old Glory

I've never been enrolled in a Military Academy, but by osmosis I have picked up the idea that in these places the orders of a superior are rarely questioned and almost never reversed by popular demand.
On a different but allied topic, I've also picked up, that although the flags of other nations are "dipped" in salute to the colors of friendly powers or respected individuals - Old Glory NEVER is.
The US Naval Academy Chapel appears to be an exception to both rules.

OK ... annoying as the Convict Rabbi case is ... it pales by comparison to France’s President Sarkozy’s bright idea for mending ethnic and religious fences in France. Three hundred sixty two days of the year, I more or less feel that the Nuremburg Trials put the final stake through the heart of Christian anti-Semitism. It’s hard to believe that there’s a problem ‘out there’ that Jews have to be seriously concerned about. After 1800 years – it’s finally over. There’s some careless talk. A disagreeable book or movie every few years, but nothing to be afraid of.
Then someone in a position of real political influence and authority weighs in, and – well that’s the other 3 ¼ days. This Saturday was one of those days The NY Times had two stories about powerful Christians with a Jewish Problem solving it it on their own terms, when easier, and more respectful solutions were available – if only someone had asked
